How it all started

In this series, we explain the motivations of why our founders started Sphere. Tim is one of the co-founders of Sphere and has been working in the F&B industry for 10 years. Having risen through the ranks from waiter, to manager, to business director, he really knows his way around restaurant management and food. When he’s not busy pimping out our startup, he likes experimenting with increasingly gluttonous incarnations of carbohydrates in the kitchen.

Why did I decide to start Sphere POS? It’s a fairly simple answer. There was a gap in the market for a product that could integrate data across multiple systems. I mean, solutions did exist but they weren’t cheap and meant you were at the mercy of the incumbents.

I wanted something that could benefit the F&B industry by allowing app developers with good ideas help with the way restaurants are being operated.

I was also motivated by a desire to help even out the playing field. Personally, I was fortunate enough to be born into a family with a comfortable means of getting by. And I am acutely aware of what a privilege it is. It has afforded me opportunity for learning and personal development, leeway for failure and safety nets for risk. Therefore, I believe that my work should either allow easier entrance into markets and/or provide a space for a person to prepare for life ahead.
